Volunteers must attend a Shelter Training Session. These sessions are held about twice a month.
You do not need to register to attend a session. Just come to the LUM building at 525 N. 4th St.
at 6:30pm. Please bring a pen with you. If you are working to fulfill community service hours,
please bring your court papers. See the box at right for the schedule of upcoming Training
Sessions.

After you have completed a Training Session, you will be given the opportunity to sign up on the calendar. Our calendar is usually full several weeks in advance unless we receive a cancellation.

On the night you are scheduled to work, you are to arrive at 8:15pm. You will be able to leave the following morning at 7:00am.

Each volunteer is placed in one of three areas: Check-in Desk, Kitchen (serve food), or Hall & Bath (distribute towels, soaps, shampoo etc.).

Lights are out at 10:30pm. Three volunteers and one coordinator are scheduled nightly. After lights out, the three volunteers divide the evening into shifts and take turns staying awake. Each
volunteer sleeps in the Volunteer Room about 5-6 hours per evening.

Wake-up is 6:00am sharp. A small breakfast is served and all guests must be gone by 7:00am. Volunteers who are working to fulfill community service hours will receive 10.5 hours credit each
night.

Food for a meal

Providing meals for the Emergency Shelter
Each night of the year, a hot meal is provided at the LUM Shelter. Planning and preparing a meal is a great activity for families, church groups, campus groups and civic groups.
